World’s Best Wreck Diving Site: Video Review of Zenobia

Zenobia MS, the Swedish cargo ship built in 1979, sailed off to its first voyage in June, 1980. The first mission was to carry a few dozen trucks (weighing over 40 tones) to Greece.

But after entering the Larnaca harbor, not far away from the final destination, the computerized system gave way, so the ferry began to tilt to the left and sank to the bottom of the sea.



Luckily, all of the passengers were evacuated and the ferry itself was towed aside, not to obstruct the entrance to the harbor.



The weather permitting, the outlines of the ship are even visible from the surface because the ship remains almost in vertical position.



Nowadays, Zenobia is one of the best wreck diving sites in the world, thanks to the availability of a large number of different premises and compartments, internal transitions, as well as well preserved items of the cargo, mainly large trucks, which encourage dozens of divers to descent to the bottom of the harbor again and again in order to discover something new in this world of underwater wrecks.



In this part of the harbor the currents are usually not very strong, the visibility reaches up to 100 feet but diving here is still recommended for experienced divers only.



Additionally, divers can observe a large number of marine species, which inhabit the bottom of the sea. As it has been over 35 years since the disaster, the old Zenobia with its radio room, restaurant hall, cargo deck, various corridors and passages is slowly turning into a huge man-made reef.
