Upcoming Electric Vehicles that Can Become Better than Tesla Cars

The idea of making electric cars has been around for a while. But only the pioneering approach and flawless execution by Tesla Motors has shown us that EVs can be fast, reliable and fun to drive.

But Teslas, despite being the most popular and efficient, are not the only electric cars out there and there are some alternatives, which you can choose, depending on your budget, driving style and preferences.

Better than Teslas? Top 10 Electric Car Alternatives to Tesla 3 and Model S

Alternative to Tesla Model X: Volkswagen Budd-E

The closest competitor to Tesla Model X is an upcoming microbus by Volkswagen. Expected to hit the market in 2019, the Budd-E has many futuristic features and technical specifications that we want any all-electric family car to have. The car is fitted with a 101 kWh (Kilowatt hour) battery that provides up to 373 miles of pure electric range and a quick-charge option, which fills the battery to an 80%-level in just 15 minutes.

Budd-E uses two electric motors with a combined capacity of 300 horsepower. As a result, Budd-E shows a 0 to 62 miles per hour acceleration time of 6.9 seconds and can travel at speeds up to 112 miles per hour.

With a built-in voice control system, touch screen and gesture-controlled navigation, ability to communicate with a "smart home" setup and other futuristic features, this electric car is already presented as the most high-tech vehicle in the world.

Luxury alternative to Tesla Model S: Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6

New luxury sports car, Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, is an unprecedented fusion of art and technology. It sits on original 24-inch wheels, has a stylish streamline-body and gull-wing doors. Inside, you will see luxurious passenger seats, huge door to door display and an interactive system, which projects all the information any driver might need onto the windshield. Every driver will appreciate these displays, especially, when the autonomous driving mode is switched on.

Underneath the floor, Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 hides a flat 80 kW/h (Kilowatt hour) battery, which is used to power electric motors with the total capacity of 750 horsepower and to get up to 310 miles of range on a charge. As a result, this futuristic-looking coupe can hit 62 miles per hour in less than 4 seconds and accelerate onwards to an electronically limited top speed of 155 miles per hour.  With a quick-charge option, this car can get extra 60 miles of range in just 5 minutes.

The fastest EV: Rimac Concept_One

When in Ludicrous Mode, the dynamic characteristics of Tesla P90D are jaw-dropping – this luxury sedan can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in less than 3 seconds. But if you want to drive even faster, there is a faster and sportier alternative for you.

Claiming the title of the world's fastest production electric vehicle, Rimac Concept_One can boast a power output of 1088hp, 1600 Newton-meters of torque and a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 2.6 seconds. But this Croatian car manufacturer didn’t want to stop here and raised the bar even higher by presenting an even more powerful Concept_S.

Sports car alternative: Porsche Mission E

With its Ludicrous performance characteristics Tesla has entered the sports car territory, thus intimidating internationally-known supercar manufacturers. That is why many companies try to preserve their domination by electrifying their vehicles.
Porsche were one of the first to react by present their vision of an all-electric sports car. Mission E, a 600 horsepower car with 300 miles of range, as well as other superb electrified cars, have already been featured in our previous reports, so if you somehow missed it, you can check it out here.

Prototypes by Chinese manufacturers

Chinese manufacturers are trying to keep up with the trends by releasing their prototypes of electric cars and by making sure that they are fast and technologically advanced.

Inspired by the Formula-E racing cars, Arcfox-7 is equipped with 603 horsepower electric motors, capable of producing 1050 Newton-meters of torque. Such technical characteristics enable Arcfox-7 to accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour is just 2.8 seconds and drive at speeds up to 160 miles per hour. The first sales of this car are expected to start in China this year and the car is said to have a range of about 180 miles.

One more Chinese electric car, usually referred to as the Tesla Killer, is LeSEE LeEco. The managers of the company, despite having a concept car, which is only entering a testing phase, claim that their four-door sedan will be cheaper, faster and longer-lasting than Tesla Model S.

This car is expected to be the first driverless supercar in the world, which can be controlled by a driver, advanced autopilot or remote-controlled with a smartphone. While at the moment LeSEE LeEco sounds too good to be true, the partnership with Faraday Future and Aston Martin is a clear indicator of company’s serious intentions.

Electric vehicle of the future: Faraday Future FFZERO1

FFZERO1 is a futuristic, single driver electric sports car. Equipped a 1000 hp electric engine, this vehicle takes about 3 seconds to accelerate to 62 miles per hour and has the capacity to reach speeds of over 200 miles per hour.

By its look, technical specifications and software that not only analyzes the performance of the car but also the biometric information about the driver in order to provide more comfortable ride, FFZERO1 clearly shows that it’s a car ahead of its time.

Although, in terms of performance, Faraday Future got very close to the toughest Tesla Model S, shouldn’t ever be compared. The car by Faraday Future is nothing similar to the cars from Tesla’s lineup. But FFZERO1 was never intended to be put up for sale, it was created solely for the purpose of showing the capabilities of the company and possible directions of developing electric cars in the future.

Alternatives to Tesla Model 3

Tesla Model 3 is the most exciting electric vehicle – it is comparatively affordable, it gives the true feel of Tesla performance and has a decent driving range. But if you don’t want to wait in line, there are several affordable cars with a good range that you can buy now.

Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen and Chevrolet already have good electric vehicles you can buy and we have already reviewed some of them here.
