First Serial Production Plug-In Hybrid SUV by BMW: X5 eDrive

One of the best selling SUV models by BMW has been upgraded to fit modern technological needs.

The classical X5 body will be fitted with a hybrid set­up to create the first plug­in SUV by this #German manufacturer. The first concept of the PHEV X5, which is named eDrive was first shown at the Frankfurt auto show.

As promised, BMW have done several corrections and now are releasing a serial version, which will have engine 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, 94-horsepower electric motor and lithium-ion battery, which is located underneath the trunk.



Unlike the old X5, the new eDrive hybrid has received a significant interior style upgrade: beautiful leather seats with blue stitching, stylish eDrive branding on the headrests and smart backlighting.



Vehicle's control unit allows to change heating or air conditioning settings remotely, which is especially handy, while the SUV is charging.



The compartment, where the battery is located is covered by a pretty looking transparent door. Speaking of the battery, its capacity will be enough to drive for 30 kilometers on a single charge.



Due to the space taken up by batteries, the luggage compartment is slightly smaller and, according to the manufacturer it can easily fit four golf bags.



With the collective power of two engines, the X5 eDrive SUV reaches the speed of 60mph is just 7 seconds. Additionally, even in the pure electric mode, the throttle response is expected to be very exciting, as the electric motor produces its maximum torque of 250Nm from the start.



The fuel efficiency of X5 eDrive in the combined driving mode (full batteries and fuel tank) is expected to be 3.8 liters per 100 km.

The car’s battery may be recharged via the usual home outlet, however, BMW has created a wall charging station Wallbox Pro. It is controlled via a touch screen and has the power of 7.4 kW.
